HENRY SORRELLS EDGAR (01 December 1821 - 22 July 1908) (Family Tree Database)
Born 01 December, 1821, in Maury County, TENNESSEE, Henry was the third
child and third son of James S. EDGAR and Selah WITHERINGTON EDGAR.
The 1830, Census of Maury County, TENNESSEE records Henry as one of the
three "free white males of ten and under fifteen" n his parent's household.
The 1840, Census of Maury County, TENNESSEE records Henry as one of the
two "free white males of fifteen and under twenty" in his parent's household.
Before 1847, Henry married Alice MORTON (b. 1828 in TENNESSEE) in Maury
County, TENNESSEE, and they had two girls Nancy Jane EDGAR (17 Sep
1847 - 06 Nov 1935) and Tennessee Alabama “Bammy, Bammie” EDGAR (10
Feb 1849 - 24 Dec 1938). Alice died before the move to TEXAS in 1853.
In the 1850 Census of Maury County, TENNESSEE, Henry was a farmer living
"next to" his parent's farm, with his wife "Annis," his three-year-old daughter Nancy J. and his one-year-old daughter,
Tennessee A.
Since James's and Selah's first child, Joseph, died in 1837 and their second child, John, moved to TEXAS sometime between
1844 and 1846 probably to claim and settle the land grants of his brother Joseph, Henry was the eldest child of James and
Selah to help lead the 1853 Edgar family relocation from Maury County, TENNESSEE to DeWitt County, TEXAS. Widower
Henry traveled with his two young daughters.
On 15 July, 1858, Henry married Tabitha Jane BROWN (23 Sep 1835 - 09 Oct 1889) (EDGAR-BROWN Connection) in DeWitt
County, TEXAS (source: Texas Marriage Collection, 1814-1909, Ancestry.com) Tabitha Jane was twice widowed of John W.
HARRALL (m. 1952, d. 1853) and Perry DAVIS (d. 1856) and brought to the marriage her one year old son, William Perry
DAVIS (b. 1857).
Less than a year later, the first child of Henry and Tabitha, Sarah Annas "Annie" EDGAR, was born on 30 April, 1859 in
Concrete, DeWitt Co, TEXAS (d. 24 Nov 1939).
Their second child, Mary Elizabeth (Kate) EDGAR, was born 28 February, 1862 in DeWitt County (d. 13 Apr 1951).
Sometime during the US Civil War (1861 - 1865), Henry served as a "2d. Lt. with Captain M.G. JACOBS in the Concrete Home
Guard" (source: Book: History of DeWitt County)
Tabitha Jane EDGAR, their third child, was born early 1864 and died soon after on 16 February, 1864.
A year later, Kittie Bourbon EDGAR was born on 28 February, 1865 in DeWitt County (d. 05 Jan 1945).
Henry's and Tabitha's first son, Henry Brown EDGAR, was born on 13 February, 1867 (d. 21 Mar 1907).
The 1870 Census of DeWitt County, TEXAS records Henry as 50 year old a farmer.
Sixth child and second son John Lenon EDGAR was born 27 November, 1871 (d. 28 Aug 1892).
Eliza Jane EDGAR, their seventh and last child, was born in 1874.
The 1880 Census of DeWitt County, TEXAS records Henry as 59 year old farmer.
Henry's second wife Tabitha Jane died at the age of 54 on 09 Oct 1889 and is buried in the EDGAR Family Cemetery in
DeWitt County, TEXAS.
The 1890 Census of DeWitt Co, TEXAS records Henry as born in Dec 1821 and a 78 widower and farmer.
The Cuero Record newspaper article and photo, dated 28 August 1898, reports the 27 August reunion of six of the nine Edgar
brothers born to James S. Edgar and Selah Witherington. "Yesterday the six Edgar brothers, who came to Texas together in
1853 met at the original home of the family when they first landed in Texas, now owned by Dock Edgar, some few miles north
of this city. The six brothers, their residence and ages are given below: John, the eldest, 79 years old, lives in Karnes County;
Hyman the next to the youngest, 68 years old, lives in Tom Green County, while Henry, 77 years, Doc, 73 years, Joshua, 71
years and Frank, 63 years, all reside in De Witt County."
Henry EDGAR died 22 July, 1908 in Cuero, DeWitt County, TEXAS and is buried in the Hillside Cemetery in Cuero, DeWitt

"Henry Edgar, Sr., Dead.
This morning Mr. Wm. Davis [William Perry DAVIS, b. 1857], of this city, received a message of the death of his
stepfather, Mr Henry Edgar, Sr., which took place last night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith, Mrs. Smith
being a daughter. Mr. Smith resides about ten miles from Cuero. Mr. Edgar came to this portion of Texas from
Tennessee some time before the war and here he made his home at and near Edgar for the past number of years.
There is was that he raised an interesting family six of whom are living today as follows: Mrs. Jone Batchelor
[Nancy Jane EDGAR BATCHELOR, 1847 - 1935], at Yoakum; Mrs. J. P. Brown [Tennessee Alabama “Bammy,
Bammie” EDGAR BROWN, 1849 - 1938], Karnes City; Mrs. W. T. Knox [Sarah Annas “Annie” EDGAR KNOX,
1859 - 1939] and Mrs. Wm. Kellett [Kittie B. EDGAR KELLETT, 1865 - 1945], Coleman; Mrs. Wm. Guthrie
[Mary Elizabeth “Molly” EDGAR GUTHRIE, 1862 - 1951], Pettus ; Mrs. Charles Smith [Eliza Jane EDGAR
SMITH, b.1874], ten miles from Cuero, and Mrs. Wm. Davis [William Perry DAVIS, b. 1857], a step son in this
city [Yoakum]. Mr. Edgar was one of those large generous characters of whom everybody had a good word.
He had reached the very ripe old age of eighty-eight and during his life time in Texas did much for his adopted
state. Mr. Edgar survived two wives. Of the past few months he has been in rather bad health, so that his call
home was really no great surprise to his children who realized that old age and ill health does not prolong life
to any great length. Mr. Davis does not know at present, but is under the impression that Mr. Edgar had
requested to be buried at Cuero. If he has made no such request he may be laid to rest in the family grave yard
which adjoins the old Edgar home. The Herald extends sympathy to the children in their great loss."
