In 1838, the Republic of TEXAS gave three land grants to Joseph Smith Edgar:
1. 1476.13 acres to Joseph S. EDGAR, 10 March 1845 (10 January 1838), Gonzales 1st
For his presence in Texas prior to its Declaration of Independence, he was granted one-third of a league or 1,476 acres.
"In the Headright Certificate issued to his heirs January 10, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Gonzales County
Board it is stated that Joseph S. Edgar came to Texas in November, 1835." San Jacinto Museum: Veteran Biographies
This land grant became the Edgar Family Homestead.

For his participation in the Battle of San Jacinto, he was granted 640 acres. "He was a member of Captain Robert S.
Calder's company at San Jacinto and on January 15, 1838 his heirs received Donation Certificate No. 764 for 640 acres of

This Certificate 764 was lost, and in 1846, John EDGAR
completed the required process to have a duplicate certificate
issued. One step of the process was to post the following notice
in the The Texas Democrat in the following 1846 issues: 08
July, 15 July, 22 July, 29 July, 08 August, 26 August, and 09
September.
The citation for the 08 July 1846 edition is as follows: The
Texas Democrat (Austin, Tex.),Newspaper, Vol. 1, No. 27, Ed.
1, Wednesday, July 8, 1846, Ford, John S., editor.

3. 320 acres to Joseph S. EDGAR, 20 May 1846 (24 January 1838), Montgomery Bounty
For his military service in general, he was granted 320 acres. "In Service Record No. 6488 it is certified that he enlisted in
Captain Peyton R. Splane's Company February 26, and was discharged at (Sylvanus) Hatch's on the east side of the Lavaca
May 26, 1836. For this service his heirs on January 24, 1838 received Bounty Certificate No. 2063 for 320 acres of land."
