Tabitha Jane BROWN (23 September 1835 - 09 October 1889)

Tabitha Jane, born 23 September 1835 probably in Marshall Co,
MISSISSIPPI, was the third child and second daughter born to
James BROWN (1808-1887) and Mildred "Millie" MAYS
(1814-1900).
Tabitha Jane's first enumeration was in the 1840 US Census for
Marshall Co, MISSISSIPPI, in her parent's household as one of three
"Females Under 5."
In 1850, she was documented in her parent's family in Marshall Co,
MISSISSIPPI, as "Jane Brown, 14, Female, and attended School
within the year."
About 1852, when Tabitha Jane was seventeen, James BROWN and Mildred MAYS BROWN and their family relocated from
Marshall Co, MISSISSIPPI to DeWitt Co, TEXAS, very close to the EDGAR Family Homestead. The two families became even
closer when four EDGARS married four BROWNS.
Tabitha Jane was first married to John W. HARREL on 04 August 1852 in DeWitt County, TEXAS. After his death, she was
married to Oliver Hazard Perry "Perry" DAVIS on 04 January 1855 in DeWitt County, TEXAS, and they had one child William
Perry DAVIS (1856 - 1929).
In 1857 Tabitha Jane's younger sister Harriet Elizabeth BROWN married Arthur S. EDGAR, James' and Selah's sixth son.
After Perry's death, the twenty-three year old, twice-widowed, mother of a two year old son, Tabatha Jane married James and
Selah EDGAR's third son Henry Sorrells EDGAR (1821-1908) on 15 July 1858 in DeWitt County, TEXAS. She was Henry's
second wife, and at twenty-three, Tabitha became the step-mother to Henry's two daughters -- eleven year old Nancy Jane
and nine year old Tennessee Alabama "Bammie" -- by his first marriage to Annis MORTON, who had died in TENNESSEE
prior to the EDGAR family's relocation to TEXAS in late 1953.
Less than a year later, the first child of Henry and Tabitha, Sarah Annas "Annie" EDGAR, was born on 30 April, 1859 in
Concrete, DeWitt Co, TEXAS (d. 24 Nov 1939).
The 1860 Census of DeWitt Co, TEXAS shows Tabitha Jane as "T. J. Edgar, 25, Female, Place of birth Mississippi."
Henry's and Tabitha's second child, Mary Elizabeth "Kate" EDGAR, was born 28 February, 1862 in DeWitt County (d. 13 Apr
1951).
Sometime during the US Civil War (1861 - 1865), Henry served as a "2d. Lt. with Captain M.G. JACOBS
in the Concrete Home Guard."
Tabitha Jane EDGAR, their third child, was born early 1864 and died soon after on 16 February, 1864.
Also in 1864, another of Tabitha Jane's younger sisters Mary James “Molly” BROWN, married another
of James' and Selah's sons, John EDGAR.
A year later, Kittie Bourbon EDGAR was born on 28 February, 1865 in DeWitt County (d. 05 Jan 1945).
Henry's and Tabitha's first son, Henry Brown EDGAR, was born on 13 February, 1867 (d. 21 Mar 1907).
And later in 1867, Tabitha Jane's step-daughter, who Tabitha Jane had raised for nine years,
Tennessee Alabama “Bammie” EDGAR married Tabitha Jane's younger brother Joseph
Palestine BROWN.
The 1870 Census of DeWitt County, TEXAS records Tabitha Jane as "Edgar, Jane, 35, Female, White, Occupation Keeps
house, Place of birth Mississippi."
Sixth child and second son John Lenon EDGAR was born 27 November, 1871 (d. 28 Aug 1892).
Eliza Jane EDGAR, their seventh and last child, was born in 1874.
The 1880 Census of DeWitt County, TEXAS records Tabitha Jane as "Edgar, Tabitha Jane, White, Female, 45, Wife, married,
Occupation Keeps house, born in Mississippi."
Tabitha Jane died at the age of 54 on 09 Oct 1889 and is buried in the EDGAR Family Cemetery in DeWitt County, TEXAS.
