There is at least one other James EDGAR in TENNESSEE circa our James EDGAR, born 10 Sep 1790 and died 29 Apr 1869,
who married Selah WITHERINGTON and established our branch EDGARS in DeWitt Co, TEXAS.
James S. EDGAR -- notice the middle initial S -- of Williamson Co, TENNESSEE, son of John EDGAR is often confused with
our James EDGAR of Maury Co, TENNESSEE. We have yet to find a documented reference to our James EDGAR using the
middle initial S.
James S. EDGAR is identified in this 14 September 1844 document as deeding his interest in
his father John EDGAR's estate to Isaac IVY. This James S. EDGAR was John EDGAR's son,
clearly, however, he was a resident of Williamson County. In September 1844, our James
EDGAR was married with children and was unquestionably a resident of Maury County. This
document has been misinterpreted, understandably, by other researchers to be our James
EDGAR, thus incorrectly establishing our James as John’s son. (We are working on the theory
James S. EDGAR was our James EDGAR's nephew.)
Our James married Selah WITHERINGTON in Williamson County, TENNESSEE on 06 Jan 1816, but by 1818, when his older
brother William and his family relocated to ILLINOIS, James and Selah were living in Maury Co, TENNESSEE on the land that
William had bought upon relocating to TENNESSEE about 1809. In the 1818 purchase of land from is older brother William,
James is recorded as "James Edgar of the County of Maury." (Maury County (TENNESSEE) Deed Book G, p 393)
James, Selah and family were enumerated in Maury Co, TENNESSEE in the 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses. (Census
and Sources in the Family Tree Database for James EDGAR.)
